Directions to Reserves

  • Bentley Station Meadow - Meet in Car Park at Bentley Station(SU792 432).
  • Magdalen Hill Down - Meet in the gravel car park opposite Magdalen Hill Cemetery on the B3404 ( approximately ½ mile west of Percy Hobbs Roundabout. Grid reference SU 511 295). Magdalen Hill Down is a splendid example of chalk down land. The original reserve is ancient downland and is quite steep but has a path along the top and a diagonal path from top to bottom and a rougher path along the eastern side of the bottom. The extension to the reserve situated to the east (behind Magdalen Hill cemetery) is not as steep and affords easy walking conditions. It was an ex-arable field sown with native grasses and wild flowers in 1997. To the north of the reserve is North Down an imaginative project undertaken by Hampshire County Council and partly leased and managed by BC.

For any enquiries regarding reserve events, please call Lynn Fomison on 01962 772251.

Annual Photographic Competition

As last year, this popular and light-hearted competition will be held at the Member's Day meeting.  It is an opportunity for members to display some of the images that they have taken during the year.

As last year, there will be NO opportunity to show slides or digital images at this meeting: there will be an opportunity to do so at the Social Evening early in 2009.

All images should be prints which may not exceed an image size equivalent to A4 (210x297mm) in landscape or portrait format.  Prints may be mounted - small mounts please.

A maximum of 3 entries may be submitted (i.e. NOT 3 entries per category).

Only shots taken "in the wild" are permitted.

Prints can be entered in the following categories:

  • UK Butterflies

  • UK Moths

  • Behaviours

  • Immature Stages

  • Overseas Butterflies and Moths

Members will be asked to complete a "voting slip" identifying their favourite image from each category and to choose their overall winning entry.  The results will be collated and the winners announced at the end of the meeting.

Please enter, however competent you may (or may not) feel as a photographer.  This is an opportunity to get a glimpse of what members have seen during the year and, for some, where they have been to see our favourite insects.

SHOWS AND EVENTS 2008
We will be attending the following events during the summer and as we are hoping to increase membership substantially during this, our 40th anniversary year, please volunteer to help.  If you could come and help at any one of them please get in touch with Jenny Mallett (see back cover).

  • Sunday 5 October                                'Natures Harvest', Walled Garden, Basingstoke.

  • Sunday 12 October                              Blackmoor Apple Day, Selbourne.
A visit to Blackmoor Apple Day is a good day-out, with apples and pears to taste and buy, lots of craft stalls and stalls/displays by various charities, Morris dancers and teas.  Moreover it is an opportunity to come and see the latest Branch information boards and meet Committee members and other volunteers, who are there to promote the work of Butterfly Conservation. As this is our last attendance of the year at a major event, we hope you will take this opportunity to come and say hello.
Time: 10am-5.00pm.  Directions: The event takes place next to Blackmoor Church (SU7833), half-mile west of the A325, between Whitehill and Greatham.  If travelling along the B3006 from the Alton direction turn left (east) at Selborne (narrow country lane) signed to Blackmoor.  Parking is opposite the church.  (See website: www.blackmoorestate.co.uk/events.html).

Field Trips

This year we have noted the less common species we would like to see on our walks.  As always there are no guarantees, but each year we do see 40 or so of the 46 butterflies found in Hampshire – and that’s without counting the moths.  Let’s do even better this year as we celebrate Butterfly Conservation’s 40 years of saving butterflies, moths and their habitats.  We are planning for an experienced member of the Branch’s Main Committee to be present on all our butterfly walks this summer.

FIELD TRIPS ARE FOR EVERYONE.  You most emphatically do NOT have to be an expert to come on a field trip.  Field trips can be enjoyed by anyone with any level of knowledge (or none).  Photographers, children (with adult supervision), first-time field-trippers, you are ALL welcome.

SUNDAY 7 SEPTEMBER                WINSPIT, PURBECK (Joint with Dorset Branch)
Leader: Bernard Franklin, Dorset Branch (07711) 304412.  Meet: 11.00am in Worth Matravers car park (SY 974 776).  Leave Corfe on Swanage road and turn right on the B3069.  In Kingston bear left by the Scott Arms and after one mile turn right to Worth.  Car park on right as you enter village.  A pleasant coastal walk for late butterflies and migrating birds.  Wear stout footwear and bring lunch.  Map: Bournemouth 195.  Target species: Clouded Yellow.
